This is a comment thread for the current poll. Is turkey the only mandatory component of a Thanksgiving dinner? Is everything else gravy, so to speak? Discussion welcome in the comments....

I have rarely attended a Thanksgiving dinner that included either a formal grace or giving of thanks conversation. That surprises me, given that I enjoy rituals and directed discussion. Thanksgiving is also the holiday of which I’ve had the most varied experiences and the oddest stories, but those are fodder for another post.
E) Family.
I've had lovely Thanksgiving dinners with no Turkey, no biscuits, no pie and no prayers, but the only Thanksgiving dinners that didn't seem like Thanksgiving were the ones in College with a bunch of buddies and no family. In fact, I've had Thanksgiving dinners with family, turkey, pie and prayers in December that felt like Thanksgiving.
Thanks,
-V.
Hmm. Required components: Friends and/or family, candles, some indication that it's a special meal. Turkey's the part that's just gravy. :)
The original poll was:
Thanksgiving dinner wouldn't feel complete without:
Turkey (2 votes)
Biscuits (1 vote)
Homemade pie (1 vote)
Grace before or after the meal (1 vote)
(Multiple votes allowed.)
